MODES OF INTER-ETHNIC COEXISTENCE IN THREE NEIGHBOURHOODS IN THE LISBON METROPOL

European cities have become increasingly diverse and are home toimmigrants from all over the world. The process of integratingimmigrants has become a hotly debated issue as political concernsabout social cohesion have grown. Despite these debates, there is alack of knowledge on how social interactions actually develop betweenindividuals of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds in contextswhere they meet on a daily basis. This book explores interethniccoexistence and the relationship between social interactions andneighbourhoods embeddedness in three multi-ethnic neighbourhoods inthe Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, namely Mouraria/Martim Moniz, MonteAbraão and Costa da Caparica. It is based on a research reportelaborated in the ambit of the EU-funded project GEITONIES -Generating Interethnic Tolerance and Neighbourhood Integration inEuropean Urban Spaces.
