Trois phénomènes de grande ampleur marquent de façon significativelÆaffirmation de la société industrielle au XIXe et au début du XXesiècle : les musées techniques, les expositions universelles et lescongrès internationaux. Expressions de la nouvelle synergie économique fondée sur lÆidée du progrès, ces trois formats de mise en scène destechniques ont fortement contribué à lÆessor des grandes industries et de lÆurbanisme moderne, à lÆémergence de nouvelles sciences delÆingénieur, à la mise sur pied des formations spécialisées et àlÆintensification des sociabilités professionnelles sÆexerçant au delà des frontières. En revanche, les liens intrinsèques qui les unissentdemeurent à ce jour des sujets peu défrichés. Le présent ouvrage tendà apporter sur ces questions quelques éclairages experts fondés surles recherches récentes. Three broad and closely related phenomenacharacterised the consolidation and development of industrial societyduring the nineteenth and early twentieth century: technical museums,universal exhibitions and international congresses. These three miseen scène phenomena were vivid expressions of a new economic synergybased on the ideas of progress and public good. All three, and each in its own way, strongly contributed to the development of largeindustries, the emergence and consolidation of new engineeringsciences, the implementation of specialised training and the socialstrengthening of professions across national borders. Places ofvisitation, encounters and exchanges, they were also communication and transfer centres where science and technology information circulatedfreely and long-lasting collaborations were devised. This book drawsfrom recent research and aims at bringing new perspectives into thesetopics.
